Jeff Sharlet, The Family, 2008

"Just when we thought the Christian right was crumbling, Jeff Sharlet delivers a rude shock: One of its most powerful and cult-like core groups, the Family, has been thriving. Sharlet's book is one of the most compelling and brilliantly researched exposes you'll ever read -- just don't read it alone at night!"
--Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed, Bait and Switch, and Dancing in the Streets

From the bookjacket:

They are the Family—fundamentalism’s avant-garde, waging spiritual war in the halls of American power and around the globe. They consider themselves the new chosen, congressmen, generals, and foreign dictators who meet in confidential cells, to pray and plan for a “leadership led by God,” to be won not by force but through “quiet diplomacy.” Their base is a leafy estate overlooking the Potomac in Arlington, Virginia, and Jeff Sharlet is the only journalist to have written from inside its walls.

The Family is about the other half of American fundamentalist power—not its angry masses, but its sophisticated elites. Sharlet follows the story back to Abraham Vereide, an immigrant preacher who in 1935 organized a small group of businessmen sympathetic to European fascism, fusing the Far Right with his own polite but authoritarian faith. From that core, Vereide built an international network of fundamentalists who spoke the language of establishment power, a “family” that thrives to this day. In public, they host prayer breakfasts; in private they preach a gospel of “biblical capitalism,” military might, and American empire. Citing Hitler, Lenin, and Mao, the Family's leader declares, "We work with power where we can, build new power where we can't."

Sharlet’s discoveries dramatically challenge conventional wisdom about American fundamentalism, revealing its crucial role in the unraveling of the New Deal, the waging of the Cold War, and the no-holds-barred economics of globalization. The question Sharlet believes we must ask is not “What do fundamentalists want?” but “What have they already done?”

Order yours now.

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR THE FAMILY:

"Of all the important studies of the American right, The Family is undoubtedly the most eloquent. It is also quite possibly the most terrifying. This story of a secretive and unmerciful church of 'key men' goes way beyond Jesus Christ, CEO—it's Jesus Christ, lobbyist; Jesus Christ, strikebreaker; and maybe even Jesus Christ, fuehrer."
--Thomas Frank, author of What's the Matter with Kansas?

"Forget what you think you know about the Christian Right; Jeff Sharlet has uncovered a frightening strain of hidden fundamentalism that forces us to revise our understanding of religion and politics in modern America. A brilliant marriage of investigative journalism and history, an unsettling story of how this small but powerful group shaped the faith of the nation in the 20th century and drives the politics of empire in the 21st. Anyone interested in circles of power will love this book."
--Debby Applegate, winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for biography for The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher

"Jeff Sharlet has an incredibly rare double talent: the instincts of an investigative reporter coupled with the soul of a historian. He has managed to infiltrate the most influential and secretive fundamentalist network in America, and ground his reporting in the most astute and original explanation of fundamentalism I've ever read."
--Hanna Rosin, former religion reporter for the Washington Post and author of God's Harvard: A Christian College on a Mission to Save the Nation

"A gripping, utterly original narrative about an influential evangelical elite that few Americans even know exists. Jeff Sharlet's fine reporting unveils a group whose history stretches from the corporate foes of the New Deal to the congressional lawmakers who gather each year at the National Prayer Breakfast. The Christian Right will never look the same again."
--Michael Kazin, author of A Godly Hero: the Life of William Jennings Bryan

"The organization of influence these men constitute may remind readers of a Rotary Club—but it is a Rotary Club equipped with nuclear weapons. When the Family's members say 'Let us pray,' they are not just making a suggestion."
--Michael Lesy, author of Wisconsin Death Trip

“Un-American theocrats can only fool patriotic American democrats when there aren’t critics like Jeff Sharlet around -- careful scholars and soulful writers who understand both the majesty of faith and the evil of its abuses. A remarkable accomplishment in the annals of writing about religion.”
--Rick Perlstein, author of Nixonland: The Rise of a President and the Fracturing of America

"Jeff Sharlet is one of the very best writers covering the politics of religion. Brilliantly reported and filled with wonderful anecdotes, The Family tells the story of an influential group that you haven't previously heard of, and need to know about."
--Ken Silverstein, Washington editor of Harper's and author of The Radioactive Boy Scout

“I was once an insider’s insider within fundamentalism. Unequivocally: Sharlet knows what he’s talking about. He writes: ‘Our refusal to recognize the theocratic strand running throughout American history is as self-deceiving as fundamentalism’s insistence that the United States was created a Christian nation.’ Those who want to be un-deceived (and wildly entertained) must read this disturbing tour de force.”
--Frank Schaeffer, author of Crazy For God: How I Grew Up As One Of The Elect, Helped Found The Religious Right, And Lived To Take All (Or Almost All) Of It Back

The Family offers the reader an astounding entrée to a fascinating Christian network unknown to most Americans. Jeff Sharlet has managed to peel back the curtain and reveal an elusive organization that wields an unsettling amount influence over our country’s lawmakers as well as business and political leaders worldwide. The Family is a must-read for any American who wants to know who is actually pulling the strings at the highest levels of power.”
--Heidi Ewing, co-director of Jesus Camp

“Jeff Sharlet provides a fascinating account of how part of American Christianity has gone off on a dangerous tangent. It should worry everyone -- maybe especially those of us who understand the Gospels to be a call to help the powerless, not prop up the powerful. In the last few years evangelicals have begun to reconsider their automatic support for the status quo; The Family will help accelerate that important renewal.”
--Bill McKibben, author of The End of Nature and The Bill McKibben Reader

"The author of that Harper's piece is the fearless and fantastically talented Jeff Sharlet, who just came out with a book about [the Family]. I can't recommend the piece or the book strongly enough."
--Noam Scheiber, The New Republic

Jeff, thanks for visiting my blog, and thanks for publishing that frightening article in Harpers on the Family. I'm certainly going to be buying and recommending your book.

You weren't the only one who had a Google alert that found my (rarely trafficked) blog. About twenty minutes after you visited, someone from the US Senate hung around and read my entire posting. My poor little blog never gets that kind of excitement.

Jeff, how are you making sure this book doesn't suffer the same fate as "Hillary: The Movie", which seems to be lurking only on the underground circuit, while Hillary runs rampantly and blatantly forward destroying the Democratic Party unchecked? I for one, will absolutely spread the word to my fairly large circle.

Thanks, Sandra. HarperCollins has a couple of publicists working on it, and I'm doing my best to hit up friends in media to help out. Beyond that, it's just rolling the dice. Every bit helps.

Arrived here from the Nation item on H. Clinton. I wanted to see what else you thought about.

I see.

It is only a matter of time before I have to choose the lesser of two candidates. I am reading B.O.'s Audacity of Hope. Not much new yet. Sort of a laundry list. We may be be stuck with two people who have had a lifelong identity crises problem. H.C.'s dad always said she could "do better" so here she is trying to do better. B.O. has had to make up for not having a father for his rite of passage moment. He seeks approval.Along the way H.C. and B.O. have found the challanges of public life an attraction. More approvalor more rejection. Along the way they have earned their credentials to occupy some of my mind. It is a curious thing that that pundits say H.C. is the working man's candidate and B.O. is the elite and intellectuals candidate. What is more curious is their religious affiliations. Is that politics or a true faith and religious practice? Either candidate has some explaining to do do. I just want to get rid of Bush. Maybe Ralph Nader has something to offer?
I look forward to you new book H.C. elitist spiritual life. I am not a customer, but I will watch for it in my local library. Thanks for paying attention to the important stuff. Charles

So timely, I wonder if this book prompted the Hillary smear machine to sling dirt at Obama over his "sinister minster". It would be nice if the media picked the story up with the same vigor they have been repeating Clintons smears about Obama.

It's amazing to me that in the 1990's it was right-wing Republicans trying to destroy the Clintons. Now it's Democrats trying to destroy the Clintons, especially Hillary. You can't be serious that diplomacy is a bad thing.
People should lay off people's religions, or go after them all, especially Obama's racist and exclusionary one.

I think it's clear this book was written to try to destroy Hillary Clinton. It's a hit piece. However, the American people don't like it when you go after people's religion- it's the very essense of "anti-American".

Wow, this is an eye-opener. I will do whatever I can to bring more eyes to your book, as I feel that when the economy is in the terlit, the Fundies will use the opportunity to shoehorn their version of 'relief' into more of the general dialog.

Jeff,

Are you aware of any "Family" connections of any of the major media personalities or, more specifically, Rupert Murdoch? I'm wondering just how far the tentacles of this network reach and whether "the peoples' right to know" is compromised as a result.

Jeff Sharlet said...

Machiado -- I'm not exactly a fan of Rupert Murdoch, but if he's a member of the Family he sure is a fair-minded one -- he's publishing my book. That said, I agree that his media empire has been a generally anti-democratic force.

Citizen Shelley: Given that four pages out of 464 are about Hillary -- and the fact that I voted for her in the NY primary -- it's hardly fair to say that this book was written to destroy her. But it is critical of her association with a group that defines "diplomacy" solely as serving the interests of the powerful. I've since switched my support to Obama, but I'm not out to get Hillary. Rather, I believe that when a politician asks us to take their religion seriously as an influence on their political thinking, we should do so. I've done no more than take Hillary at her word.

Anonymous said...

Jeff, do you have any idea whether any of the Scientologists are networking with The Family? Power politics makes strange bedfellows.

trog69 said...

Good morning, Mr. Sharlet.

With many of Rupert's enterprises, people can't quite come to grips with the fact that Mr. Murdoch is a Capitalist. Your book should make for lively reading, thus a money-maker. It could be about him, and Rupert would still publish it if it was a money-maker. Capitalism is inherently anti-democratic, thus the disconnect.

Candidates run on record, future plans (policies), character, and intellect. A candidate's relationship to religion is highly relevant, particularly when the religion is exclusionary and racist. The pastor disaster was not a smear, just an expose based on irrefutable facts. It started when certain CDs found their way to the media. I haven't heard of any Clinton link.

Mr. Sharlet,
In light of the controversy surrounding the other candidates' spiritual affiliations, has your publishing company scheduled any near future interviews for you with the press? I am certain it would be awful good for book sales.

I am very interested in seeing some mainstream media coverage of your book! Have you scheduled any interviews with folks such as Charlie Rose? This is critical news at this critical time, given the media's one-sided coverage of candidates' religious affiliation. (Sorry for "anonymous." I hit your site coming from a First Read blog on MSNBC. I have no idea how this identity stuff works. I'm one of those old Clinton-aged women who is a non-Clinton supporter.)

Gordon,

Why the double standard? No one (at least not in the main-stream-media cares to point the finger of "exclusionary and racist" to the likes of Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell and Jim Bakker are all at least as much so as Wright. Don't forget what these guys said after 9/11 - isn't it anti-american to say our country is being punished by God?

I just wonder why these white racists get a pass, but black preachers such as Wright (or heck, even Farrakhan) get the double standard treatment. Reverend Wright has very little power. The aforementioned preachers (and others like them) DO have LOTS of power, but get a free pass.

I am white, not that it should matter...

Jeff, care to comment?

Mr. Sharlet,

In your opening statement on the Diane Rhem Show you described two faces of "Christian fundamentalism." You pointed to the image of the televangelists and the "Bible-thumpers" as accepted, conventional fundamentalism, and then you discussed The Family as this other face that you have found.

Of course, "Christian fundamentalism" is an expression with a problematic history. If it describes a deep and total faith that the Bible is God's revelation in a unique sense, and that Jesus was and is the Messiah, then I am a fundamentalist. But I do not see myself in either of those descriptions.

The reality, of course, is much richer and more complex. There are many of us with fundamental faith in Christ who, contrary to stereotype, opposed the war in Iraq, who favor diplomacy with Iran, who are ashamed of the too-numerous moments in our nation's history when we have imposed our overreaching interests by force or by coup; many of us who have no desire to force religious teaching upon people with different world views, many of us who hope for more liberal social policy, and on and on - and this, not in spite of, but rather BECAUSE of our fundamental faith in the Creator as revealed in scripture, and our faith that Jesus was in fact the Messiah, and our desire to live lives of integrity.

My open question, for what it's worth, is simply this: is there room in the American conversation for a "fundamentalism" that believes that Jesus is the Way, and yet has no interest in trying to co-opt the power of American government in an attempt to promote this faith (or at least the outward appearances associated with it) by force?

I certainly hope so. Noah Feldman's /Divided By God: America's Church-State Problem, and What We Should Do About It/ has encouraged me that there must be many of us, with all sorts of strongly held world views, who hope so. If we can bring our deeply held convictions to the American conversation openly (not behind closed doors as The Family is doing), always respecting the deeply held convictions of others who believe just as strongly as I, then this little experiment in a democratic republic may continue to succeed.

Thank you, Mr. Sharlet, for shedding light on this secretive organization's profoundly disturbing activities.

I am reminded of these words: "Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God" (Jesus, as recorded in John 3:20-21 NIV).

Grace and peace,
Mark

"The big Christian lobbying groups push and shout; the Family simply surrounds politicians with prayer cells. They don’t try to convert anyone. They don’t ask for anything. They’re as patient as a glacier. … Coe doesn’t demand doctrinal loyalty only a willingness to do business behind the scenes, and liberals are free to join him in the back room". --Jeff Sharlet

Jeff, this description leads me to believe that, if checked by balance, that "the family" is functioning liken to a lobby, but one that doesn't ask for anything? You imply that the family is often involved in activities among the powerful that are intended to assist the poor. Do they succeed in doing so, or are they merely another front for money and power? Does Doug Coe live in a big fancy house and drive the black S500 or Bentley?

Constance Cumbey said...

I am reading, enjoying, and digesting your book. I think that if these people were honest "fundamentalists," much of this would not have happened. Are you aware of the networking that has taken place between New Age leadership (Paul N. Temple, Barbara Marx Hubbard, David Spangler, Fritz Hull, etc.) and "The Family." Paul N. Temple is the co-founder of the decidedly New Age Institute of Noetic Sciences. Starting in the 1980s "unity conferences" were held between various "evangelical" groups and New Age ones. All took a vow of silence. Fortunately, the New Agers failed to honor their vows and starting in late October, 1987, word leaked out after a conference was co-chaired by Doug Coe and Barbara Marx Hubbard. According to Gordon Lewis, a Denver seminary professor who participated, in a conversation with Colorado journalism teacher Kathleen Hayes, Doug Coe coordinated the meetings "so as to have better understanding between Christian parents and New Age leaders." It turns out that more likely that the interlocking directorates and financial base of the Foundation was more of a factor. Paul N. Temple has been a major financial benefactor of both "the Family" writing his checks under Three Swallows Foundation to "International Foundation". The address on his 990s for International Foundation is Doug Coe's address!

In an April 1988 Seattle speech at Seattle's Unity Temple, Barbara Marx Hubbard said: "Now all the groups with OUTWARDLY DIFFERENT PURPOSES are merging and blending and coming together to do the one work.

Not since Jim Jones have we had such an amusing reversion of players. Jim Jones had a New Age cult that was listed in 1972-1973 (possibly others, those are the two years I own) New Age directories as a participating organization along with the Theosophical Society, Unification Church, Lucis (the former "Lucifer Publishing Co.) Trust and others including Werner Erhard and various swamis as a New Age player. So was the Spiritual Counterfeits Project under its original name of WORLD CHRISTIAN LIBERATION FRONT. All were working together under the slogan of "WE ARE ALL ONE -- THE GOD IN ONE IS THE GOD IN ALL" --

After the Kool-Aid party, the New Agers shamelessly proclaimed: "if we don't stop these fundamentalists, we'll have lots more Jonestowns."

I like to think I had some small role in giving Jim Jones back to the New Agers. I'd like to give Fellowship Foundation back to them as well.

Another interesting aspect you might want to visit is the incursion of this in Europe under different names. Norman Grubb's brother, Kenneth Grubb, led very similar efforts in Europe. It appears most obvious to me that Theosophy was the real game. Norman Grubb was inspired by Jacob Boehme -- the same source of inspiration for the very name "Theosophy" which Madame Blavatsky assigned to the Theosophical Society. For those unfamiliar with the orientation of that group, its magazine now called THE THEOSOPHIST was then called LUCIFER -- presumably after the patron 'saint' of their Movement.

Keep up your good work. Thanks for adding to the body of knowledge on the family. i feel very bad for those involved in it with good intentions, but I agree with Wayne Madsen who will be interviewed on my own internet radio program this afternoon -- this is a massive operation bordering on criminal -- using Jesus as a logo, not a Savior!

Although I don't know Constance Cumbey personally, I am quite familiar with her work and with the New Age Movement. Constance knows what she's talking about. I look forward to reading Jeff's response.

It's true that these guys in The Family are in no way true fundamentalist Christians. That term refers to those who believe in the "fundamentals" of Christianity such as the fact that God gave His son Yeshua (Jesus) as a sacrifice for the sins of the world and raised Him from the dead on the third day. I know because I am a fundamentalist Christian. As a group, we tend to withdraw from rather than engage in the political activism, believing Yeshua's words, "My kingdom is not of this world."

There is a historical context to the term "fundamentalism" as regards Christianity. It has nothing to do with taking over governments. God calls us to love all men, even our enemies and to live quiet lives, minding our own business, loving our neighbors, and not entangling ourselves with the lusts of this world, including the lust for power. Our love for the Bible, God's word, instructs us to live this way.

Whatever the family is, it isn't fundamental Biblical Christianity.

kim olsen said...

Thank you Contance for your input on this subject.

90% of the people in the US may call themselves Christians but do they read their Bibles? Do they attend church to worship God in faith an spirit? NO

A true Christian Fundamentalist believes Jesus Christ came in the flesh, was crucified, died and arose from the dead. He is coming again. That is why many of us do not engage in the polital arena because when Jesus Christ returns he will overthrow all governments that exist as we know them.

A politician who is running for president or who has been a president has already been bought and paid for and answers to a worldwide group that is unknown to the general public. THe UN, COR, CFR, all hold to a new world order that has nothing to do with Jesus Christ but instead promote a counterfeit religion. One that is inclusive for the whole world and all religions.

I hope the interview with Contance Cumbey happens as I have her books and know of her important research.

"By their fruits you shall know them."

It is so easy to look at the shadow of a tree as it falls across the grass and see demons. The mind creates some pretty aberrant images when allowed to run wild with a kernel of the truth, but I ask you to go back and look at that verse. Can you honestly say that the Fellowship bears poisonous fruit? So much of the peace in the world today is the result of their work behind the scenes with leaders... a simple knitting together of believers around the world united in the concept that Jesus is not a religion but a relationship. Jesus said, "If I be lifted up, I will draw all people to myself." Many people of all religions have seen that and come together united under the teachings of this one man who gave himself to 12, taught thousands and turned the world upside down in just 3 years. But, as a sad testimony to the basic trailer park psyche of mankind: it's demons that sell books. Dan Brown knows the formula and, it seems, you do as well.

Look at the rancorous furor the "partial truth" your book has ignited. People who haven't even read it are so completely drugged by the aura and mystery and dark designs of the shadow, they can't see that the tree is indeed healthy, bearing tremendously voluptuous fruit... and will continue to do so under the protection of the King of Kings. Hello Mr. Sharlet -

It might be about seven months too late and after the fact, but I figured I'd mention that I posted a review of your book on my blog.

Cheers,
Austin

Jeff,

I just heard your interview on Terry Gross' Fresh Air. Very scary and enlightening. Look forward to reading your book. I hope the interview helps publicize your book.

Hi Jeff,

I too heard about your book on Fresh Air. Congrats on your excellent work and thank you so much for taking this deep dive to bring to light what, for so long, has been hidden.

Thank you,
Shannon

For those of you whom are subscribed to the comments for this article, I want to draw your attention to another interview with Jeff Sharlet by Francesca Rheannon. It appears here: http://www.writersvoice.net/2008/08/the-secret-fundamentalism-at-the-heart-of-american-power/

I heard you on NPR radio on my commute home. I bought your book and I am enjoying it. I thought it was interesting that when I went to the Wheaton, IL Borders to buy it, the clerk and I had to search for it. We found one copy in the back of the store in the Religious section. I wasn't shocked that Wheaton, a Guinness World Record holder for most churches per capita, would not want to have your book out for all to see. Or maybe they just quickly sold out? -

Saw you on Rachel two nights in a row this week. Your book is on Kindle and paperback on Amazon. I started reading it right away.

OMG! I'm already stunned. I did "know" that there were right wing Bible study groups threaded through the House and Senate but absolutely missed your book last year. I also know that Hillary is a member of one such group. Is it one of these groups? Goodness, I hope not as a leftie. Back to reading today. Thanks for your work.
